WATCH: CNN Host Destroys GOPer After He Claimed ‘Everybody’ Will Get Tax Cut Like Trump’s
Republican Rep. Peter Roskam made an appearance on CNN on Tuesday when he got called out for falsely claiming that the GOP tax plan will give cuts to “everybody” and not just the wealthy.
CNN host Alisyn Camerota pointed out that “for some people, particularly in blue states, they are going to see their taxes go up.”
Roskam, who represents the blue state of Illinois, insisted otherwise and said that removing deductions for state and local taxes would not hike rates for his constituents.
“I understand what you’re saying about the benefits of low expectations,” Camerota jabbed. “But the idea that 55 percent of the country, opposes it, does that suggest that you and your fellow Republicans and the White House have not done a good job of selling the merits of this bill?”
“There’s two purposes,” the Republican lawmaker responded. “One is tax relief and one is a positive business environment. And when you net this bill out… this is an incredible accomplishment that is going to yield those two things.”
Camerota then asked if “it’s not a tad bit unseemly to have people like President, his son-in-law Jared Kushner being the beneficiaries of something like this giveaway?”
Roskam tried to brush off the question by saying that the story about Trump getting a tax cut had been “debunked.”
“So real estate developers do not get any benefit?” Camerota pressed.
“What I’m speaking to is the story you’re citing has been debunked,” Roskam repeated.
“Do real estate developers get a tax cut?” Camerota asked again.
“Everybody gets a benefit in terms of how we’ve tried to approach this bill,” Roskam insisted.
“Not everybody in the country gets a benefit,” Camerota shot back. “They just don’t.”
