Bye-Bye Trump?: Dems Come Together To File New Impeachment Articles Against The President
Donald Trump’s days in the White House are numbered. According to Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), a group of Democrats will be filing new articles of impeachment against Trump before Thanksgiving.
Gutiérrez, who leads the charge, said on Wednesday, “It is clear to us that he is unfit to be president of the United States of America.”
The Democratic Congressman said that the group is working with constitutional scholars to solidify their case against Trump.
“I assure you we will not leave you lacking for reason,” he said.
Democrats have been held back from filing articles of impeachment against Trump because they feared it could politicize the ongoing investigations into Russian hacking of the 2016 election and potential collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
Gutiérrez said he’s tired of waiting and the wait is over. He said that this week’s indictments have fueled the effort even more.
“There is increased interest,” he said.
Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman (Calif.) and Al Green (Texas) have both already introduced articles of impeachment against Trump. Green stopped just short of forcing a floor vote on the issue last month.
“I’m in no rush to be first, but I will say this: We have to — we have to bring it to the floor,” Green said.
Green took notice that his efforts could agitate Democrats who believe the aggressive push could intervene with Mueller’s ongoing investigation.
“I can’t let my record show this,” Green said. “The people who will probably judge us, probably haven’t been born.”
Gutiérrez seems to agree, and he’s glad to have a growing coalition to help him make the case.
“I appreciate what single members have done,” Gutiérrez said. “I think it’s time to do a group.”
