Older Brother Of Syrian Boy Whose Image Shocked The World Dies In Airstrike
Last week, a picture of five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, from Syria, in the back of an ambulance with an expression of incomprehension on his dust- and blood-caked face after an air strike, shocked people around the world. Now, several news outlets have reported that his 10-year-old brother has died from injuries sustained in a similar attack.
Ali Daqneesh, 10, was wounded in an air strike and died hours later. He had internal bleeding and organ damage, doctors told the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based monitoring group, and a witness who was present at the time of the death along with the boys’ father.
According to the Observatory, fighting and airstrikes have killed 448 civilians in and around Aleppo so far this month.
The World Food Programme described the situation as “nightmarish” amid growing international concern over the humanitarian cost of the war in Syria.
The U.N. has called for a weekly 48-hour ceasefires to allow humanitarian aid to enter besieged parts of Aleppo, a plan Russia supports and the rebels also welcomed.
