Trump Is Militarizing The White House, Lawmakers Sound The Alarm

Following President Trump’s decision to appoint Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly as his new chief of staff on Friday, some lawmakers warned that Trump is militarizing the White House.

One of those lawmakers, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) blasted the move, saying the appointment “militarizes the White House.”

“By putting Gen John Kelly in charge, Pres Trump is militarizing the White House & putting our executive branch in the hands of an extremist,” Lee tweeted.

Lee, a retired four-star Marine general who previously headed up U.S. Southern Command, has reasons to be alarmed. When Trump delivered the commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy in May, he was presented with a ceremonial sword — to which Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, standing nearby, quipped, “Use that on the press, sir.”

The swipe at the news media on which the president so often trains his ire showed how much Kelly has become a kindred spirit to his boss, who announced Friday he was tapping the DHS secretary for White House chief of staff.

Kelly will start at the White House on Monday, replacing Reince Priebus as chief of staff.

Trump made the announcement via Twitter on Friday:

Kelly’s aides say he and the president have become exceptionally close and Kelly has become the chief defender of Trump’s erratic immigration policies.
