In a blistering letter to President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday, over 169 Democratic congressmen and women expressed their unequivocal rebuke of his appointment of former campaign manager and Breitbart editor Stephen Bannon as White House Chief Strategist.
The legislators, pointing Bannon’s white supremacist ideology and his peddling of xenophobia, misogynist, anti-Semitic, and openly racist propaganda at Breitbart, demanded that Trump make good on his promise to “unite the country” by keeping such a divisive figure out of his administration.
“Millions of Americans have expressed fear and concern about how they will be treated by the Trump Administration and your appointment of Mr. Bannon only exacerbates and validates their concerns,” they wrote.
They added: “We strongly believe that Mr. Bannon’s appointment will not allow the country to heal and come together as one. As one of your top advisors, the White House chief strategist will help set the tone for your administration. The person in the role must be prepared to serve the interests of all Americans, not those of a select few.”
Sadly, it appears that Donald Trump has no interest in uniting the country and is intent on putting his unconstitutional and discriminatory campaign promises into law. His team is already said to be preparing executive orders to implement their proposed registry of Muslim immigrants so that “so that Trump and the Department of Homeland Security hit the ground running.”
Bannon is a self-declared racist whose appointment was cheered by neo-Nazi groups and the Ku Klux Klan. Leading white supremacists like former KKK Grand Dragon David Duke, American Nazi Party Chairman Rocky J. Suhadya, Richard Spencer, Peter Brimelow, and Brad Griffin have praised the news of Mr. Bannon’s appointment.
Civil rights groups, including the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, are widely opposed to Mr. Bannon’s appointment.
If Trump truly wants to unite this country and be a leader for all the Americans he now represents, he will send Bannon packing as soon as possible. If he doesn’t, we the American people must fight tooth and nail to protect our rights and to oppose his deplorable crusade of hate and bigotry.
