Third-Highest Ranking Official In Justice Department Just Quit Amid Trump’s Attack On DOJ
On Friday, the third-highest ranking official in the Justice Department resigned as associate attorney general due to Donald Trump’s and the GOP’s constant criticism of the department.
According to two people who knew of the decision, Rachel L. Brand “plans to step down after nine months on the job as the country’s top law enforcement agency has been under attack by President Trump.”
Brand was the next person in line to oversee the special counsel’s inquiry into Russian influence in the 2016 election if current deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, were to be fired. According to multiple reports, Trump has been considering firing Rosenstein.
Brand could have been in “the crosshairs of the president” if she would’ve taken the position.
