Another Top Administration Official Resigns Over Trump’s ‘Reckless’ Move In Syria

Another top US official is stepping down in opposition to President Donald Trump’s abrupt decision to withdraw roughly 2,000 American troops from Syria, giving total control of the region to Russia.

Brett McGurk, the State Department’s special envoy for the global effort to defeat the Islamic State, has resigned in protest over what he called an “irresponsible” move by the president, according to the Associated Press.

McGurk’s departure comes 24 hours after Defense Secretary James Mattis resigned in disagreement with the president’s decision to yank all U.S. troops from the war-torn Middle Eastern nation.

In a briefing last week, McGurk criticized the prospect of a U.S. military retreat from Syria, telling State Department reporters: “Obviously, it would be reckless if we were just to say, well, the physical caliphate is defeated, so we can just leave now.”
