In a Tuesday interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Trump said that he is willing to debate Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton… with a little request: He wants to get rid of the moderators.
Since NBC’s Matt Lauer received widespread criticism for failing to fact-check Donald Trump at the Commander-in-Chief Forum last week, members of the public and the press have been urging moderators for the upcoming debates to do better.
Trump, however, said that Lauer did well and that criticism of his performance was unfair, then predicted that when the presidential debates start he will be the one treated unfairly.
Trump then proposed the most obvious solution to the problem: Get rid of the moderators.
“Let Hillary and I sit there and just debate,” he said. “I think the system is being rigged so it’s going to be a very unfair debate. I can see it happening right now because everybody was saying ‘he was soft on Trump,’ and now the new person is going to try and be really hard on Trump just to show the establishment what he can do. I think it’s very unfair what they are doing. I think we should have a debate with no moderator, just Hillary and I sitting there talking.”
This is not the first time Trump has taken issue with debate moderators and debates in general. Everyone remembers when Trump went to war with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and declined to a Republican primary debate hosted by Fox in favor of hosting a fundraiser.
