As Melania’s Parents Become Citizens, Trump Wants To Bar That Road To Citizenship For Other Immigrants
Donald Trump and many of his conservative lawmakers friends want to get rid of what they refer to as “chain migration,” meaning they want to stop citizens from sponsoring their family members who are immigrants to become citizens. The odd thing is that Trump’s own wife, Melania Trump, did just that with her parents who became citizens today.
According to Melania’s parents immigration attorney, the couple received their citizenship using the process of “chain migration.”
Michael Wildes, the attorney for the first lady’s parents Viktor and Amalija Knavs, told The New York Times on Thursday that their daughter had sponsored them for a green card, and they eventually applied for citizenship once they were eligible.
Wildes was asked if the couple became citizens through chain migration.
Wildes replied, “I suppose. It’s a dirty — a dirtier word.”
“It stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification,” he told the Times.
According to The Times, the Knavs, who were born in Slovenia, became citizens on Thursday during a ceremony in New York.
So, this same process that Melania’s parents used to become citizens, Trump frowns upon it.
Trump described the immigration process as “chain migration,” and have called for it to be replaced with a merit-based system that would prioritize immigrants with certain skills for green cards.
But, many immigration advocates and liberals refer to the program as “family migration” and “family reunification visas,” claiming the term “chain migration” is offensive.
Trump has been very critical of the immigration system to the point where many criticized him of being a racist. He once suggested that the U.S. should welcome more immigrants from “places like Norway” while referring to El Salvador, Haiti, and African nations as “shithole countries.”
“Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives,” Trump said during his State of the Union speech earlier this year. “Under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children. This vital reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security and our future.”
