Former chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) Michael Steele lambasted President Trump’s comments dismissing GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore’s accusers were “beyond stupid” and that he doesn’t care about his own party.
“This is beyond stupid. And there’s irreparable harm that’s being done to this party and to this country,” Steele told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. “Someone needs to take control here and it’s certainly not the president.”
Trump threw his support behind Moore on Wednesday, pointing to Moore’s denial of the sexual assault allegations against him and the need for a Republican to take the seat over a liberal Democrat.
The former RNC chief said Trump and former White House strategist Stephen Bannon “don’t give a damn” about the women who have accused Moore or the Republican party itself.
“That’s what’s so sickening about what the president did today. And every self-respecting Republican needs to stand up and say ‘enough, you cannot side with Roy Moore on this,” Steele said, saying that the nine women who have accused Moore are “credible.”
