Sophia Nelson, a former House GOP Committee counsel, appeared on MSNBC on Saturday after Donald Trump tried to pick a fight with former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Trump was asked on Saturday about Obama’s new book, where she expressed her anger at the president for the years he spread the “birther” conspiracies about her husband Barack Obama.
“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed. But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks,” she wrote, according to excerpts printed in The Washington Post
“What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls?” she worried. “Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
Trump responded to those claims by saying he would “never forgive” former President Obama for how much funding he gave to the military.
Nelson, who wrote the book Black Woman Redefined, said Michelle Obama, “remains enormously popular across the board — Republican women love her as much as Democrat women — she’s very popular.
“If the president were a real man, and yes, I’m saying that — I’m calling him out, he would have said, ‘you know what, I was out of line with the birther thing and she has every right to be concerned about the safety of her kids, I didn’t get it right.’ But of course we know that he will never do that,” she argued.
Nelson predicted that one day Trump would get “cranky” and lash out at Michelle Obama on Twitter.
“Look, he’s already in trouble with black women,” Nelson reminded. “He’s gone after April [Ryan], he’s gone after Abby [Phillip], he’s gone after Yamiche Alcindor. They’re all friends of mine, they’ll all black female journalists who are extraordinary and outstanding.”
“He has already gone off the rails with black women a number of times, I don’t think he wants to do it with Michelle Obama,” she cautioned.
“Yes, I think it appeals to his base, but I think that his attacks on black women in particular, whether it’s Frederica Wilson (D-FL) or Maxine Waters (D-CA) or Omarosa, he’s particularly nasty — calling them dogs, calling them stupid, calling them a loser,” she reminded. “As a black woman, that’s code language, we all know what that means and we don’t like it and we’re not going to stand for it either.”
“Expect to hear a lot more from us sisters about the president’s behavior,” she advised.
