NJ Legislators Hint at Christie Impeachment As ‘Bridgegate’ Evidence Mounts

According to NBC-4 NY, Key members of the New Jersey Assembly have begun taking steps to bring articles of impeachment against Gov. Chris Christie. The move follows testimony in the George Washington Bridge scandal trial that suggests the Republican governor may have known about the lane closures in Fort Lee in 2013.

Christie, with nearly two years left in his second term as governor, has insisted for three years that he had no knowledge of a plot to shut down access lanes to the busy bridge connecting New Jersey and Manhattan as part of a political vendetta. But the trial has produced evidence that shows Christie knew about politically motivated lane closings.

One committee chairman who did not want to be named told NBC-4: “clearly obstruction of justice” would be an obvious charge against the governor. The decision on impeachment will be up to Democratic Speaker Vincent Prieto and if he gives the go-ahead, the Assembly Judiciary Committee would begin the process.

Although Democrats hold a majority in the Senate, they would need three Republican senators to join them if all Democrats vote to convict, according to NBC.
