During a heated interview on Thursday night, CNN host Chris Cuomo and White House counselor Kellyanne Conway clashed over whether President Trump lied when he said he had no knowledge of hush-money payments made to silence women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump.
Trump’s former longtime personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen told a judge this week that Trump personally directed him to make the payments to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who came forward during the 2016 presidential campaign with allegations of affairs with Trump.
Conway, who began the CNN interview advising the host not to embarrass his mother on television, took issue with Cuomo’s assertion that Trump was lying when he claimed that he had no knowledge of the payments beforehand.
“The president lied about what he knew about these women, he should not lie to the American people, in their face, time and again,” Cuomo said.
Conway demanded that Cuomo play Trump’s answer to questions about whether he knew about the payments made to Daniels and McDougal.
Cuomo responded by playing the tape as well as another supposedly recorded during the campaign and released by Cohen that depicts the lawyer and Trump discussing payments made to the women.
Cohen told a judge this week that Trump, who has previously denied advance knowledge of hush-money payments that Cohen made during the 2016 election, had directed him to make the payments in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
Cohen, who surrendered to the FBI this week, pleaded guilty to charges of bank and tax fraud as well as campaign finance violations related to the hush-money payments.
He entered his guilty plea the same day that Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was found guilty on eight counts of bank and tax fraud.
