Cummings Brings Up Concerning Question: Why Does Kushner Still Have A Security Clearance?

Top House Oversight Committee Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings, wants answers from the White House, asking them to explain why Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner still has a security clearance.

Cummings’ question comes after multiple reports revealed that Kushner failed to disclose meetings with Russian officials and businessmen.

The New York Times reported in April that Kushner failed to release dozens of contacts with foreign leaders during his security clearance application. This raises concern, especially since the application requires a list of all encounters with foreign government officials over the past seven years.

According to The Washington Post, Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. told his superiors that Kushner wanted to build a secret communications channel between Trump’s transition team and Moscow.

“It is unclear why Mr. Kushner continues to have access to classified information while these allegations are being investigated,” Cummings wrote, citing government rules that say when there are credible allegations that a government employee is unfit to handle classified information, the employee’s security clearance is suspended pending an investigation.

Cummings also questioned the White House for not suspending Michael Flynn’s clearance after former acting Attorney General Sally Yates had warned them that Flynn might be susceptible to Russian blackmail.

“Although the White House received credible allegations of obvious security concern relating to General Flynn from the Acting Attorney General, it appears that the White House did not suspend his security clearance while those allegations were reviewed,” Cummings wrote.
