Democrats Take On NRA With Bill Banning Assault Weapons

On Monday, Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) introduced new legislation that will ban assault weapons.

Less than two weeks after the tragic shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead, Cicilline and Deutch introduced the legislation calling the Assault Weapons Ban of 2018.

One of the weapons that would be ban with the new law would be the AR-15, the weapon used at the Parkland shooting.

The legislation would make it “unlawful for a person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a semiautomatic assault weapon.”

The bill would not ban semi-automatic weapons that were “lawfully possessed” when the measure went into effect.

According to the White House, Trump is against such ban.

“[Trump] campaigned for president and was opposed to the assault weapons ban, and his position hasn’t changed on that,” a spokesman said.

Trump, alongside other Republicans, have been accused of being bought off by the National Rifle Association. The NRA has also opposed the bill banning assault weapons.
