Donald Trump’s Russia troubles will not be going away anytime soon. On Wednesday the Department of Justice a Paul Manafort business assoiciate as a top Russian mob boss.
According to NBC News, Dmytro Firtash, who highly supports Vladimir Putin and has close ties to Manafort, was accused of being in an “upper-echelon [associate] of Russian organized crime.”
Firtash’s lawyers tried to get the charges of bribery dismissed, but the government declined and responded with 115-page filing against the Firtash with close ties to Putin.
Also, according to the report, Firtash had previously admitted to his involvement with the Russian mob.
“Also in 2008, according to a State Department cable posted by WikiLeaks, Firtash told U.S. Ambassador William Taylor that he got his start in business with the permission of one of Russia’s most well-known organized crime bosses, Semion Mogilevich,” NBC News reminded.
According to NBC News, Firtash’s relationship with Manafort was not only financial but also political.
NBC reported that, “Another leaked cable said that Manafort’s job in 2006 was to give the Party of Regions an ‘extreme makeover’ and ‘change its image from … a haven for mobsters into that of a legitimate political party.’”
This could be really significant in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia as well as federal investigators who seek to get Manafort to “flip” and testify against President Trump.
