Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) released a statement Friday morning following President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he gloated about the incident.
“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!,” Trump said in a tweet earlier on Friday.
Trump’s tweet is his latest jab at the Maryland lawmaker following days of attacks aimed at Cummings’s Baltimore district.
In a brief statement, Cummings confirmed that an intruder attempted to break in through his front door before being scared off by Cummings’s yelling.
“An individual attempted to gain entry into my residence at approximately 3:40 AM on Saturday, July 27. I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house,” the lawmaker said through his office.
Trump has referred to Baltimore as “rat infested” in recent days as Cummings became the latest minority lawmaker targeted by the president.
