In Russia, domestic violence kills 14,000 women every year, according to the Russian Interior Ministry. However, things are about to get worst.
Now, emboldened by the election of Donald Trump, who is a vile misogynist and self-described p*ssy grabber, Vladimir Putin and his conservative allies have just passed a bill that would decriminalize some forms of domestic violence, The Huffington Post reported.
The controversial bill, known as the “slapping law”, passed 368 to 1, with one abstention in the Duma legislative body. The new law would eliminate criminal penalties for first offenses or attacks against a woman or a child that cause injuries but don’t require hospital treatment or require sick leave from work for the victim, one of the authors of the bill told the BBC.
The move has enraged rights groups who say the measure will leave abuse victims even more vulnerable.
But the proponents of the law think otherwise.
“Battery carried out towards family members should be an administrative offense,” arch-conservative senator Yelena Mizulina said, according to CNN. “You don’t want people to be imprisoned for two years and labeled a criminal for the rest of their lives for a slap.”
Incredibly, the Russian Orthodox Church also backs the bill, which its leaders see as in line with its patriarchal view demanding a man’s wife and children’s absolute submission to him.
Women and anti-violence activists say the measure invites an open season of violence on abused women and children. Activist Alena Popova has launched a petition on change.org that demands the Duma pass a completely new law against domestic violence. It had garnered nearly 180,000 signatures by Saturday morning, CNN reports.
Novaya Gazeta journalist Olga Bobrovaaid that domestic violence is a normal way of life in Russia and noted that many violent assaults may not require hospitalization or event leave marks on a victim’s body, but can still “transform her life into a living hell.”
And these are the people Donald Trump is praising every day. Welcome to Trump’s world.
