Ex-GOP Official Stole $1 Million From Taxpayers To Take Lavish Vacations, Blames Mental Illness
A former Republican state official in North Carolina admitted to stealing about $1 million from taxpayers on Friday when she pleaded guilty but claimed that it was her mental illness that caused her to do so.
According to Raleigh’s WRAL, former Wake County Register of Deeds Laura Riddick was charged with six felony charges of embezzlement by a public officer
According to investigators, Riddick stole more than $900,000 from public coffers in the span of 7 years (between 2010 and 2017).
The report reveals that the former GOP official used the money to take lavish vacations, going to resorts in Blowing Rock and Waynesville, NC and in Florida as well.
“Documents related to the investigation show almost-daily deposits into Riddick’s bank accounts over a period of more than seven years,” WRAL noted.
Riddick’s lawyer blamed the official’s “compulsion to hoard money” on her past, claiming that she was abused as a child and that caused her to act the way she did.
“Holding an elected position of trust, I committed a serious crime for which I will always be deeply remorseful,” the ex-official told the judge as her voice cracked.
Riddick’s plea deal will make her pay back the $926,615 to the government for the funds she stole while also serving five to seven years in prison.
According to the report, some of her prison sentence may be served on a work-release program that will allow her to “leave prison on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to work in the community.”
