Last week, the resignation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn delivered yet another blow to the scandal-ridden Trump administration.
But Flynn didn’t resign just because what he did looks bad. It was illegal — and he also lied about it, according to the FBI, and now thanks to the press shedding light on the matter, he’s out.
In response, president Donald Trump held a chaotic press conference where he attacked the press, calling reporters “dishonest” and declaring that any negative news about Russia –or his administration– is “fake news.”
But reporters are not only ones interested in Trump’s scandals.
A majority of the public also think the resignation of Michael Flynn as the White House national security adviser last week is worthy of a congressional investigation, a new HuffPost/YouGov survey finds, with a near-majority saying his conduct could be indicative of a broader issue.
That’s bad news for Flynn who stepped down Monday after revelations that he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
According to the Huffington Post, 45 percent think Flynn’s conduct was a very serious problem, 25 percent say it was only somewhat serious, and 15 percent that it was not very or not at all serious.
By a 30-point margin, 54 percent to 24 percent, Americans say there should be a congressional investigation into the circumstances leading to Flynn’s resignation, the survey shows.
Another poll, released Friday by SurveyMonkey, found even wider agreement, with 67 percent of Americans favoring a congressional investigation into the events leading to Flynn’s resignation and 30 percent opposed.
Flynn’s debacle would look bad in and of itself. But his departure is all the more ironic since Flynn once lead “lock her up” chants for Trump rallies to demonize Hillary Clinton.
“That’s right,” Flynn said at the Republican National Convention as he led the crowd in a big chant after a fiery speech on Clinton. “Lock her up” was trending during the early morning hours as users shared YouTube video of his speech.
This video is now very awkward for Trump!
And everybody says… LOCK HIM UP, LOCK HIM UP!!
