Giuliani Just Suggested Trump Will Pardon Manafort And The Two Are Still In Contact
On Thursday, during an interview with Politico, Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani admitted that the president’s legal team has a backchannel to communicated with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
Giuliani said that the backchannel serves as a communication line to share confidential information with one another.
“All during the investigation we have an open communication with them,” he said. “Defense lawyers talk to each other all the time where as long as our clients authorize it, therefore, we have a better idea of what’s going to happen. That’s very common.”
According to Politico, Manafort is holding out for a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller because he believes the president will eventually pardon him.
Trump had lashed out at his former Attorney Michael Cohen last month after he flipped on the president and admitted to making an illegal campaign donation at the president’s behest during the 2016 presidential election.
“One of the reasons I respect Paul Manafort so much is he went through that trial — you know they make up stories,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News last month. “People make up stories. This whole thing about flipping, they call it, I know all about flipping.”
