GOP Rep. Chris Collins said on Wednesday that Democrats are to blame for the shooting that injured Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise, saying that their political rhetoric caused the shooter to act.
The New York Republican said during an interview on WBEN that Democrats have “gone to far” with their opposition to Donald Trump.
“I can only hope that the Democrats do tone down the rhetoric,” Collins said. “The rhetoric has been outrageous: The finger-pointing, the tone, the angst and the anger directed at Donald Trump, his supporters, really then, some people react to things like that, people get angry as well, and you fuel the fires.”
Collins then added that he will be using his Second Amendment right and will be carrying a gun in public.
Collins was asked if he felt “threatened” for being a Trump supporter.
“You’re exactly right: I’m the most visible Trump supporter in Washington,” Collins said. “So yeah, of course I am concerned, but I’m not going to live my life any differently.”
