The GOP Just Took Away Six Essential Obamacare Benefits

The Senate stayed in session Wednesday night until almost 2 a.m. so Republicans can strip health care coverage away from 30 million Americans without having a single Democratic vote.

Republicans do not care about the American people’s health. They have said that they want to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something else, but have shown absolutely no plan in what they will do after getting rid of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

During last night’s session, Republicans got rid of six benefits that come with having the ACA.

1).Blocked an amendment that would have protected people with pre-existing conditions

About 1 in 4 non-elderly American have pre-existing conditions. With republicans blocking this amendment, these people will face significant health costs. This also takes away coverage for people with disabilities and chronic health conditions. Republicans have yet to give their plan on how they will insure these 52 million people with pre-existing conditions.

2).Blocked an amendment that makes it easier for young people to stay on their parent’s plans until they are 26

The law set up by Sen. Tammy Baldwin(D) that made it easier for young people to stay in their parents’ health care plan until the age of 26 has helped over 6 million young adults get insured. Although 85% favor this amendment, Republicans are doing away with it.

3).Blocked an amendment allowing contraception to be covered under health insurance

Thanks to Obamacare, birth control is more affordable than ever. Spending on contraceptive health care has gone down by 20 percent since the Affordable Care Act took effect. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand(D) had set up this amendment to continue this momentum but Republicans thought it would be wise to block it as well.

4).Blocked an amendment protecting the expansion of Medicaid

Thanks to this expansion under the ACA, 11 million low-income Americans were able to benefit, which in 2015 alone created thousands of jobs for direct care workers. Republicans voted against this.

5).Blocked an amendment that would make it easier for children to be covered under Medicare/CHIP

With Republicans blocking this amendment, it will be harder for children to keep their health coverage on Medicaid or CHIP, which provided comprehensive health care services for children.

6).Blocked an amendment that would make it harder to keep veterans from getting coverage from the VA

This amendment would have made it harder to restrict veterans’ ability to access VA healthcare. This is something Donald Trump has proposed to eliminate altogether. A poll in 2015 found that almost two-thirds of survey respondents oppose plans to replace VA health care with a voucher system, an idea backed by many Republican lawmakers and presidential candidates.

Republicans are showing that they don’t care for the working class. Doing away with the ACA will cause millions to lose their health insurance.
