GOP Lawmaker Just Compared El Paso Shooter To A Preacher And Claimed He Can’t Be Charged With A Hate Crime

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) appeared on a local television network where he told two right-wing reporters that charging the man who killed 22 people at an El Paso, Texas Walmart with a federal hate crime wouldn’t be the right thing to do because it would lead to the locking up of preachers.

Gohmert, who brought America the racist term “terror babies,” has occasionally been called the “stupidest” Congressman, and his Monday interview with KETK did nothing to dispel the rumor.

“There is no death penalty under federal law,” Gohmert said. That, too, is not only false (here’s the DOJ’s page on the death penalty), the DOJ just a week ago announced it is executing five death row inmatesstarting in December. “All of this screaming and yelling, ‘we need to punish him for hate crimes,’ you know, that’s just going to be something used to lock up preachers someday.”

It’s hard to watch such stupidity, but below is Gohmert’s statements about the mass shooter that killed 22 people in El Paso:
