GOP Lawmaker Just Urged Whitaker To Investigate DOJ Employees Who Are Not Loyal To Trump: Watch
U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) called on acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker on Friday to conduct an investigation into career Department of Justice employees to make sure that they are loyal to Donald Trump and nobody else.
“I would hope that wisdom in you as Attorney General,” Gohmert told Whitaker at the Judiciary Committee hearing, “would be to look at the backgrounds, look at the people who are political hacks, and figure out, ‘Oh, they’re giving me advice on this? This is not for my well-being, this is to hurt the President of the United States.’”
“Look beyond career, look to where their loyalties are, because, even though they may be in a career position, if their loyalties are not to the Attorney General and not to the President of the United States and are more political than they are constitutional, disregard what they say.”
Gohmert basically asked Whitaker to make sure DOJ employees are loyal to the president. But there’s a huge problem with that claim. When all federal officials take an oath, they promise to be loyal to the U.S. Constitution, not to any person, be it the president or not.
The relevant passage of the oath is: “I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”
