On Wednesday, during a congressional baseball practice, multiple Republicans were shot at by gunman James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.
The shooting left five people wounded, one of which was House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who has underwent three surgeries since the shooting and remains in critical condition.
As a result of the shooting Republicans are now trying to use taxpayer funds to pay for their own security instead of focusing on the problem of gun violence.
The Washington Post reported, “In the wake of Wednesday’s shooting, lawmakers are pushing to be allowed to use taxpayer funds to boost security at their personal homes and during events in their districts.”
But, what Republicans don’t seem to understand, or at least chose not to, is that gun violence is a real problem in America. 93 Americans are killed each day due to gun violence, but not everyone has the luxury of using taxpayer funds to hire security.
Republicans need to focus on the actual issues. Instead of spending that money on themselves put forth the effort in gun laws that will keep America safer.
Americans are now getting the message that their lives don’t matter to those Republicans in Congress. To know that the first thing Republicans think of after one of their colleagues gets shot is that they need protection instead of focusing on gun violence sends America the message that they are never going to fix the real problem and that the possibility of getting gunned down is just a fact of life in the United States of America.
