Appearing on CNN Tuesday night, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) slammed President Trump’s rhetoric toward North Korea, comparing Trump to a first grader on a playground.
“I guess the president regards this as a show of strength,” Himes told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “But as everybody who’s ever been in a, you know, first-grade playground recognizes, it’s usually the person who’s most aggressively pounding their chest that is, in fact, the weak one on the playground,” he continued.
Himes’ remarks come after the president tweeted on Tuesday that the nuclear button on his desk was “much bigger” and “more powerful” than that of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s nuclear button.
Trump’s bizarre tweet was in response to Kim Jong Un’s New Year’s Day speech, in which he said he had a nuclear launch button at his desk, and that the global community would have to learn to accept North Korea’s status a nuclear-armed country as a reality.
The North Korean leader also revealed in his address that he would consider sending a delegation of athletes to the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.
Pyongyang announced on Wednesday it had resumed communications with Seoul for the first time in two years.
