During a speech in Reno, Nevada on Thursday, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton delivered a blistering indictment of Donald Trump and his “alt-right” allies, exposing their ties to white nationalists and other racist movements.
Clinton criticized Trump for playing to the “paranoid fringe” of far-right media outlets such as Breitbart News and Alex Jones’s InfoWars. She specifically went after Trump’s partnership with Breitbart News, which was recently solidified when Trump hired Breitbart boss Steve Bannon to be his campaign’s CEO.
“From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” she said. ”… and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two political parties. His disregard for the values that make our country great is profoundly dangerous.”
Clinton added: “The de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the ‘alt-right,’” Clinton said. “There’s always been a paranoid fringe in our politics, steeped in racial resentment. But it’s never had the nominee of a major party encouraging it, and giving it a national megaphone. Until now.”
Clinton ripped into Trump’s multiple racist comments in the past, highlighting his “Birther” attacks on President Obama; his declaration that Judge Gonzalo Curiel couldn’t fairly oversee the Trump’s University fraud case because he was a “Mexican”; and his false claim that “thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 terror attacks.
“This is what happens when you treat the National Enquirer like gospel,” Clinton said.
