Donald Trump doesn’t know much about governing a country and his meeting with German chancellor Angela Merkel proves exactly why.
According to a German official who spoke with The Times of London, Trump didn’t seem to understand that the U.S. cannot negotiate a trade deal with Germany alone, he has to deal the with European Union as a bloc.
“Ten times Trump asked [German chancellor Angela Merkel] if he could negotiate a trade deal with Germany. Every time she replied, ‘You can’t do a trade deal with Germany, only the EU,'” the official said.
They continued: “On the eleventh refusal, Trump finally got the message, ‘Oh, we’ll do a deal with Europe then.'”
Merkel reportedly spoke with her cabinet members and told them that Trump had “very basic misunderstandings” on the “fundamentals” of the EU and trade.
Merkel made a visit to the White House last month and taught Trump a few lessons on how to do his job. She reportedly convinced him to negotiate with the EU as a bloc. This came after Trump and his administration’s attempts to negotiate a deal with individual countries were declined.
