National Security Adviser Defies Trump, Says Russia Meddling Beyond Dispute

In a clear departure from President Donald Trump’s narrative that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 presidential election to help him defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, national security adviser H.R. McMaster told an international audience that “the evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 American election is beyond dispute.”

McMaster’s remarks came as he answered questions from a Russian delegate at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov left the same stage.

Addressing the indictment of 13 Russians announced Friday, McMaster said “with the FBI indictment, the evidence is now incontrovertible” of Russia cyber-meddling, Politico reports.

The U.S. official also blasted the Trump administration’s plan to work with Russia on cybersecurity, saying “we would love to have a cyber dialogue when Russia is sincere about curtailing its sophisticated form of espionage.”
