According to a new CNN report, the federal investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia is now expanding to focusing on alleged financial crimes.
According to the report, leads that involved individuals close to Trump, but are not necessarily related to Russia, are being passed along to special counsel Robert Mueller.
When Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein first appointed Mueller he said that the special counsel can investigate any matters that “arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”
After being appointed, Mueller was warned by Trump to not look into his past business dealings, saying that was crossing the line.
Last month Mueller announced he was looking into Trump’s past business transactions.
The CNN report comes after Mueller impaneled a grand jury, seeking a large-scale series of prosecutions.
According to Reuters, the grand jury will be issuing subpoenas to individuals involved in the June 2016 meeting with a Russian government lawyer.
