White House senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump both tried to “bribe” Planned Parenthood in an attempt to stop the women’s health organization from performing abortions, according to Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.
According to People magazine, Richards met with the couple in January of last year. Her new book states that “Kushner told her Planned Parenthood ‘had made a big mistake by becoming ‘political.’”
“The main issue, he explained was abortion,” Richards wrote in her book.”If Planned Parenthood wanted to keep our federal fundings, we would have to stop providing abortions. He described his ideal outcome: a national headline reading ‘Planned Parenthood Discontinues Abortion Services'”
According to her book, Make Trouble, Kushner told Richards that if she agreed to their terms, Planned Parenthood would receive more funding, but the White House adviser told her to “move fast.”
Richards says in her book, “If it wasn’t crystal clear before, it was now. Jared and Ivanka were there for one reason: to deliver a political win.”
“In their eyes, if they could stop Planned Parenthood from providing abortions, it would confirm their reputation as savvy dealmakers. It was surreal, essentially being asked to barter away women’s rights for more money.”
