During a phone interview on CNN, Billionaire businessman and media entrepreneur Mark Cuban blasted Donald Trump Monday, calling the Republican presidential nominee ‘unpatriotic’ for not paying taxes.
“After military service, the most patriotic thing you can do as a wealthy person is pay your taxes,” Cuban told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota. “That keeps the roads paved, the military paid, and kids going to school, and he obviously doesn’t understand that concept.”
Cuban, a Hillary Clinton supporter, also called on Trump to release his returns and explain which tax breaks he relies on.
“If Donald is taking tax shortcuts, maybe he bought an insurance policy as opposed to doing something in real estate and he took a huge tax write-off to offset income — we don’t know. And that’s the inherent problem: there’s no transparency and he is so ashamed of what he’s done,” Cuban said.
A report released The New York Times over the weekend revealed that Trump could have avoided paying federal income taxes for 18 years after claiming $916 million in losses in 1995. The Trump campaign said the documents were illegally obtained by the paper.
Since the report was published, Trump’s supporters have spent Sunday and Monday praising Trump for not paying taxes.
“The man’s a genius. He knows how to operate the tax code to the benefit of the people he’s serving,” former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN on Sunday.
On a separate interview on ‘Fox News Sunday,’ New Jersey governor Chris Christie praised Trump for his ability to “maneuver around the tax code.”
