McCain Is Scared For The Future Of America: ‘Our Fellow Citizens Seem To Be Flirting With Authoritarianism’

Sen. John McCain is one of the few Republicans that have stood up to Donald Trump. He’s endured many insults by the president, including one where Trump said McCain wasn’t a hero because he was captured.

During the Munich Security Conference, McCain referred to Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist, a member of the 1944 plot to assassinate Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, asking “What would von Kleist’s generation say if they saw our world today?”

“They would be alarmed by an increasing turn away from universal values and toward old ties of blood, and race, and sectarianism,” McCain said. “They would be alarmed by the hardening resentment we see toward immigrants, and refugees, and minority groups, especially Muslims.

“They would be alarmed by the growing inability, and even unwillingness, to separate truth from lies. They would be alarmed that more and more of our fellow citizens seem to be flirting with authoritarianism and romanticizing it as our moral equivalent.”

McCain then challenged listeners to recall that “we stand for truth against falsehood, freedom against tyranny, right against injustice, [and] hope against despair.”

“I am proud, unapologetic believer in the West, and I believe we must always, always stand up for it — for if we do not, who will?” the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee asked.

Trump has attacked the press over and over again, and has called anything that they report as “fake news.”

“Many of our nation’s reporters and folks will not tell you the truth and will not treat you with the respect you deserve,” he said at the White House.

“The press has become so dishonest that if we don’t talk about it, we are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people. The press is out of control, the dishonesty is out of control.”

The concern that McCain is raising here is that Trump has many followers and supporters that would believe anything the man says. This is a scary fact because Trump is manipulating their minds in order to believe lies that he’s telling them.

Throughout his whole campaign, Trump reached a pool of people that were hiding in America. People that were filled with hatred in their hearts and Trump used that to manipulate them into voting for him. Since taking presidency Trump has done the things that he promised, like banning Muslims, extreme deportation on innocent people, and signing executive orders that do not benefit the people.
