Republican Senator John McCain, who has criticized the president before, spoke out against Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
McCain said that Trump’s decision is “the wrong approach to immigration policy.”
The Republican Senator said, “I strongly believe that children who were illegally brought into this country through no fault of their own should not be forced to return to a country they do not know.”
Back in 2012, McCain disagreed with former President Barack Obama’s executive order but still believed Dreamers should not have to suffer deportation. He went on to say on Tuesday that ending the DACA program “is an unacceptable reversal of the promises and opportunities that have been conferred to these individuals.”
McCain said he will be working with both Republicans and Democrats to introduce a bill that will give these immigrants who came to the country at a young age a pathway to become legal residents.
Trump tweeted on Tuesday:
“Congress, get ready to do your job – DACA!” he tweeted.
