More Than 800K Physicians Demand Trump Let experts Determine When Public Gatherings Are Safe Again
More than 800,000 of the nation’s physicians have called on President Donald Trump to let health experts, not holidays, to determine when public gatherings are safe again as Trump has repeatedly said that he would like to see the locked-down nation back to mingling by Easter.
“Significant COVID-19 transmission continues across the United States, and we need your leadership in supporting science-based recommendations on social distancing that can slow the virus,” reads an open letter from the Council of Medical Specialty Societies.
The letter was sent on behalf of a consortium of more than 40 national medical organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Geriatrics Society, the American Psychiatric Association and the Infectious Diseases Society of America
Trump floated an Easter deadline during a Tuesday visit with his surrogates at Fox News.
“Easter’s a very special day for me. Wouldn’t it be great to have all of the churches full?” he asked during a chat with the right-wing cable channel. “You’ll have packed churches all over our country. I think it would be a beautiful time.”
The CMSS finished its request by thanking the president for engaging the medical community in discussion about the pandemic and invited him to continue to do so.
More than 105,000 Americans have been infected by the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University. That’s the highest count worldwide.
