According to a new bombshell report, the FBI is investigating whether Russian money was illegally funneled to the National Rifle Association (NRA) to benefit Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016.
Citing two sources familiar with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, the McClatchy D.C. Bureau revealed that the FBI is looking into ties between Alexander Torshin, a deputy from Russia’s central bank, and the NRA.
According to the report, Torshin has “close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA.”
The NRA became one of Trump most important backers during the 2016 campaign. But U.S. laws prohibit using foreign money to benefit political campaigns.
“The extent to which the FBI has evidence of money flowing from Torshin to the NRA, or of the NRA’s participation in the transfer of funds, could not be learned. However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump.”
Mueller’s team declined a request for comment, according to McClatchy.
