‘Next We’ll Hunt For The Illuminati’: Sen. Mark Warner Mocks GOP’s ‘Secret Society’

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, mocked Republicans for seizing on former FBI agents’ texts referencing a “secret society,” comparing it to conspiracy theorists obsessing over the Illuminati.

“I’m glad somebody’s hot on the trail of this secret society,” Warner tweeted on Thursday. “As soon as we’re done investigating Russia, we’ll join the hunt for the Illuminati.”

“Jokes aside, the reckless, coordinated, partisan attack on the credibility of the FBI is extremely dangerous,” the Virginia Senator added in another tweet.

GOP lawmakers in recent days have been highlighting texts from FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page on the day of the 2016 election that mention a “secret society.”

Republicans have pointed to the text exchanges to suggest that officials from the FBI and Department of Justice have been part of a covert effort to undermine President Trump.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) had claimed earlier this week that he had been in contact with a whistleblower with knowledge of “off-site” meetings between FBI and Justice Department officials.

But he began to back-pedal 24 hours ago, admitting on Wednesday that he had no evidence of an actual renegade FBI group and that the text from Page could have been sent in jest.

None of this would even be an issue if Republicans were not hunting so hard for a way to discredit the FBI that they abused the very “small government” principles they pretend to adhere to but only manage to execute when it helps corporations avoid accountability.
