Police Kill Deaf Man Even After Witnesses Warned He Couldn’t Hear
Tuesday night ended in the fatal shooting of a deaf man in Oklahoma City. The suspect who was armed with a stick was shot by Oklahoma City police even after they were warned by witnesses that the man couldn’t hear their commands.
According to local news station KOCO, the police were investigating a hit-and-run accident when they found the car that matched the witnesses’ description.
Upon arriving at the car police saw a man walking around holding a stick. One officer deployed a Taser on the man, while another officer fired his gun, which ended up killing the suspect.
The local news station News9 said that witnesses tried telling the officers that the man was deaf, which is why he wasn’t responding to their commands.
“He wasn’t even a bad guy,” wrote one woman who knew the man on Facebook, per the Daily Mail. “The officers shot a deaf man after the officer was told by several people he was deaf.”
But, police have defended their actions by saying that they have yet to prove that the man was actually deaf.
The officer who shot the gun has been put on leave and the police is currently investigating the incident.
