According to the Georgia police department’s police chief, the officer who was caught on camera telling a woman that they “only kill black people” will be fired.
Cobb County Police Chief Mike Register said Thursday, “There’s really no place for these types of comments in law enforcement.”
Register also said that Lt. Greg Abbott would be terminated, according to the New York Post.
The video is from a traffic stop that took place last year but was leaked earlier this week.
The footage shows Abbott telling a nervous woman to calm down because they “only kill black people.”
“You’re not black,” he said. “Remember, we only kill black people. Yeah, we only kill black people, right?” Abbott tells her.
“I feel that no matter what context you try to take those comments in, the statements were inexcusable and inappropriate,” Register said in a news conference. “Those comments have now caused the men and women who are currently working on the street today to go out and attempt to regain the public trust.”
Register said he knew Abbott personally. “I’ve always perceived him to be an honorable man, but he made a mistake.”
