Over the past several weeks, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been warning of a “rigged” election process as polls show him severely trailing behind his Democratic rival ahead of Election Day. Now, a militia group linked to his campaign has been encouraging members to stand outside polling stations on Election Day to make sure the election isn’t “stolen.”
In a Youtube video released Thursday, the pro-Trump right-wing group Oaths Keepers issued a “call to action” asking members of their organization to go undercover to polling places to watch for voter fraud.
Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the organization, posted his call to action on the group’s website under “Operation Sabot 2016,” to “help police ensure the free and fair election process is not stolen from the citizens of the United States of America.”
Rhodes urged members not to wear any Oath Keepers gear and encouraged them to go “incognito,” dressed to “blend in” with the public.
“The ideal would be to catch somebody ― you know, a carload or a busload or a vanload ― of people going from one polling place to another,” Rhodes said. “That is obviously a smoking gun video we’d like to have,” Rhodes told The Huffington Post.
The Oath Keepers is considered an “extremist” antigovernment group that subscribes to “paranoid conspiracy theories.”
According to the Huffington Post, members of the organization were involved in the Cliven Bundy standoff, and also showed up during the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, following the death of Michael Brown in August 2014.
