Racist Trump Supporter Arrested After Viciously Beating Hispanic Father And Son
A Utah man was arrested this week after assaulting a father and son at their tire shop while shouting “I’m here to kill a Mexican.”
According to Salt Lake City police, Alan Dale Covington, 50, won’t be charged with a hate crime until further investigation because they suspect he may have “some mental health issues” that “clouded his judgement,”
The Salt Lake Tribune reported on Friday that while Jose Lopez was warming up a chicken soup in his office he heard his son screaming from the garage. He said he saw a man threatening his 18-year-old son, Luis Gustavo Lopez, with a 5-foot pole.
“I hate Mexicans,” the man allegedly yelled. “I f—ing hate Mexicans … I’m here to kill a Mexican.”
According to the report, Covington began to swing a pole at Lopez’s son, Luis Gustavo Lopez. As the younger Lopez tried to defend his father, he was hit in the face and knocked unconscious by the attacker.
His father was hit in the arm and back trying to protect his son.
Covington then reportedly fled the scene after another family member came in to check on the commotion.
Luis Gustavo Lopez has been in the intensive care unit since the incident, suffering from a shattered cheekbone and eye socket, as well as a collapsed sinus, the newspaper noted.
Jose Lopez needed eight stitches in his arm and has a bruised back from the attack, the paper notes.
Veronica Lopez, his daughter, spoke with the publication about the incident, saying that, “My family feels targeted.”
Veronica Lopez said that she has seen a rise in racially provoked attacks since Donald Trump came to office.
“You just hear more of it now,” she said, adding that they were not surprised the attack happened.
Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking told the newspaper that they don’t want to charge Covington with a hate crime yet because they have reason to believe he was mentally unstable.
“He wasn’t really based in reality,” Wilking said. “We don’t want to ignore a hate crime if it’s a hate crime, but we don’t want to make it a hate crime if there’s not that aspect of it.”
