Rand Paul Takes Major Loss As Senate Denies His Effort To Strip Planned Parenthood Of Federal Funding

Republican Senator Rand Paul was shut down today after the Senate rejected his effort to attach a provision blocking federal funding for Planned Parenthood to a massive government spending bill.

Paul needed 60 votes for his provision to be added to the spending bill, but the Senate voted 45-48 on his amendment, including two Republicans who voted against it.

Part of Paul’s amendment would prevent federal funding to go to any organizations that provide abortions.

“I will never apologize for standing up for life. If it took exposing the preference of so many in my own party to continue reckless spending over protecting the innocent, it was a fight worth having,” Paul said in a statement following the vote.

Paul also attacked those Republicans who voted against his provision.

“The question is, what is more important to these Republicans? Saving lives or spending money?” he asked.
