GOP Lawmaker Lashes Out At Macron After Speech, Then Lies About What He Said To Congress
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie (R-Kent.) lambasted French President Emmanuel Macron as a “socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist” after the world leader delivered a speech to Congress on Wednesday.
Following Macron’s speech, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie tweeted: “French President is a socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist… the dark future of the American Democratic Party.”
“French President is a socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist… the dark future of the American Democratic Party,” Massie tweeted.
When another Twitter user called the tweet untruthful, the congressman added: “‘I will advocate for militarism in front of the Congress,’ Macron said.”
However, Macron said he would advocate for multilateralism — not militarism.
Macron during a speech on Capitol Hill urged Americans to reject “isolationism” and warned that the international community would continue to evolve with or without the U.S.
He also took aim at a culture of “fear and anger” that has emerged in the U.S. and Europe, and called on Americans to turn away from “extreme nationalism.”
“Both in the United States and in Europe, we are living in a time of fear,” Macron said. “You can play with fear and anger for a time, but they do not construct anything. Anger only freezes and weakens us.”
During the speech, Macron appeared to take subtle shots at President Trump, who campaigned on a message of putting “America first,” and has repeatedly criticized international agreements and traditional U.S. alliances, like NATO.
