Robert De Niro: ‘Trump Calls Everything Fake Because He Knows He’s Fake — He’s Projecting’
Robert De Niro on Tuesday night blasted Donald Trump as a “fake president” and sais that the life for Americans during the Trump presidency is like “living in an abusive household.”
“It’s a really, really serious situation we’re in,” the “Irishman” star said in a Monday interview on CBS’s “The Late Show.”
“It’s like a pall around certain things,” De Niro — who’s called Trump the “jerk-off in chief” and a “f—— fool” — told host Stephen Colbert. “It’s like living in an abusive household. You feel you don’t know what’s going to happen next, what crazy thing is going to happen next, what’s going to make you say what the hell’s going on?”
“He’s a fake president,” the 76-year-old Academy Award winner continued of Trump.
“He calls everything fake because he knows he’s fake. So he’s projecting.”
Asked by Colbert about Michael Bloomberg entering the Democratic presidential primary field in a Sunday announcement, De Niro expressed fondness for the former New York City mayor.
“He’s an adult. He’s a grownup,” De Niro, a New York native, said of Bloomberg.
“He’s run the city for 12 years. I know there are things he did, you mentioned them on the show. But he’s done good things. And he tries to do the right thing,” De Niro added.
“We just have to get past this — get over the hump into calm waters. So to me Bloomberg might be the one,” De Niro said.
The actor also said he supported another 2020 Democratic White House hopeful, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and other candidates.
“I love Buttigieg. I like so many people. But it’s a matter of he’s still young, he has time. But we need to get past this horrible situation.”
