Russian Hackers Target John McCain After He Criticize Trump

Last month, after the violent protest that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, Donald Trump failed to speak out against the violence white supremacists caused.

In response to the attacks, Senator John McCain took to Twitter to condemn the violence while also urging Trump to speak out more forcefully.

It didn’t take long for Russian hackers to attack the Republican Senator.

According to a Bloomberg report, it was only hours after McCain’s tweets that Russian hackers started up an online campaign attacking the Senator.

The hackers began linking blogs, calling the Senator “Traitor McCain” while also using the hashtag #EplainMcCain.

Russian hacking was a big issue in the 2016 presidential election. According to multiple analysts, the constant cyber attacks is a preview of what could come in the 2018 elections.

“They haven’t stood still since 2016,” said Ben Nimmo, a senior fellow in information defense at the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council in Washington, which tracked the activity. “People have woken up to the idea that bots equal influence and lots of people will be wanting to be influencing the midterms.”
