In a stunning rebuke of Donald Trump’s “harmful rhetoric,” Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) on Tuesday took to the Senate floor to blast the president for suggesting Democrats could be guilty of treason for not applauding his State of the Union address.
The White House tried to walk back the president’s comments, saying earlier in the day that Trump was joking when he labeled Democrats as “treasonous” and “un-American.”
Flake wasn’t buying it.
“I have seen the president’s most ardent defenders use the now-weary argument that the president’s comments were meant as a joke, just sarcasm, only tongue in cheek. But treason is not a punchline, Mr. President,” the Arizona Senator said.
“The president said that the State of the Union address was meant to promote and encourage unity in government. Then why follow up less than a week later with this divisive and harmful rhetoric?”
