Seth Meyers Likens Republicans To Group Protesting Outside Pharmacy That Ran Out Of Viagra

What do you call a group of Republicans so hell-bent on saving Donald Trump from impeachment that they storm a closed-door hearing? Well, late-night hosts had plenty of ideas on Wednesday night.

Seth Meyers said Republicans look like a bunch of old men protesting “outside a pharmacy that ran out of Viagra,” while Stephen Colbert dubbed them the “fraternal order of asshats.”

Meyers slammed Rep. Matt Gaetz and his gaggle of conservative colleagues during his Closer Look segment, where he noted, “Republicans are flailing so badly in their attempts to defend what Trump did with Ukraine that rather than mount an actual defense they’ve decided instead to resort to dumb stunts to shut down the inquiry altogether.”

“These guys are truly so dumb,” Meyers added. “I mean, look at this group of angry weirdos at their press conference this morning announcing they were going to storm the hearing room. I haven’t seen a group of white guys that angry since they found out their Don Henley tickets were obstructed view. Looks like a protest outside a pharmacy that ran out of Viagra. They shouldn’t be at the Capitol; they should be standing at the counter of a McDonald’s demanding to see the manager.”

Stephen Colbert said “the GOP’s having so much trouble defending Trump’s behavior that today instead of addressing any of the charges, House Republicans stormed a closed-door hearing to protest Democrats’ impeachment inquiry process,” told his audience. “It’s like when you’re on the debate team and the other side is really strong in the cross-examination—so for your counterpoint you set fire to their coach.”

The comedian then showed his audience a picture of the Republican cohort, led by Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, quipping, “That’s either a bunch of Republican lawmakers or a Black Friday sale on pleated khakis.”

In a press conference Wednesday, Gaetz told reporters, “I’m gathered here with dozens of my congressional colleagues underground in the basement of the Capitol because if behind those doors they intend to overturn the results of an American presidential election, we want to know what’s going on!”

Colbert’s response? “Ooh, ooh—I know! Donald Trump pressured Ukraine to give him dirt on Joe Biden; a whistle-blower told Congress, who are now holding hearings with Republicans in the room, until they were all interrupted by the fraternal order of asshats.”
