Steve Schmidt Slams Trump For Satisfying His ‘Autocratic Fetish’ By Revoking Brennan
On Thursday, former GOP strategist and MSNBC contributor Steve Schmidt slammed Donald Trump’s decision to revoke former CIA Director John Brennan’s security clearance by claiming that it was all an attempt to satisfy his “autocratic fetish.”
“It’s an act of retribution,” Schmidt said on MSNBC’s “Deadline.” “It’s an abuse of power by a President who shows his tendency towards his autocratic fetish with increasing frequency.”
ON Wednesday morning, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a statement from the president announcing that his administration would be revoking the security clearance of the former CIA director.
The White House also announced that it was looking into also revoking the security clearance of former FBI Director James Comey, former National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates for being critical of Trump.
Schmidt called this move a “massive abuse of power,” claiming that the Trump administration is misusing its authority.
“What we see is a president essentially saying that security clearances are not earned,” Schmidt said, pointing to the security clearances that White House aides Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have gained. “It’s not that they’re bestowed, but it’s a reward for being loyal.”
The former Republican then called out Trump for lashing out every time there’s a new advancement in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
“This is a cornered president who’s lashing out in all directions,” he said. “One of the things that we know is that through the course of this investigation each time he has acted petulantly, that he’s lashed out emotionally, he’s made the situation worse for himself.”
Schmidt was referring to Trump’s interview with The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday where he claimed that the decision to revoke Brennan’s security clearance was in direct connection to Mueller’s investigation.
“I call it the rigged witch hunt, [it] is a sham,” Trump told the Journal. “And these people led it! So I think it’s something that had to be done.”
