Tom Hanks Unloads On Trump: ‘It’s One Of The Biggest Cock-Ups On Planet Earth’
During an interview with CNN, Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks lambasted President Trump for his handling of a phone call to the widow of a fallen U.S. soldier, calling it “one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth.”
“I’m only knowing what I read in the newspapers and what have you, and it just seems like it’s one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth, if you ask me,” Hanks said on CNN.
“This is a tragedy of the utmost consequence and it goes much longer beyond who’s going to come out on top of the news story. I think it’s very sad.”
Hanks, who received the National Archives Foundation’s “Records of Achievement Award” this weekend, also encouraged Americans to look to U.S. history if they’re worried about current events in America.
“People are upset about what’s going on today. They’re furious, they’re frustrated, they’re worked up,” Hanks told the network. “If you’re concerned about what’s going on today, read history and figure out what to do because it’s all right there.”
Trump has faced intense criticism after his call to the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson after Johnson was killed in an attack in Niger earlier this month.
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.), who was in a car with Johnson’s widow when Trump called, said the president told her that her late husband “knew what he signed up for … but when it happens it hurts anyway.”
Sgt. Johnson’s family confirmed her description of the call, which took place on speakerphone.
in an effort to defend the president, White House chief of staff John Kelly blasted Wilson for disclosing Trump’s remarks, calling her an “empty barrel” who took credit for the funding of an FBI building in Miami in 2015. But the controversy got worse for Trump and Kelly when a video released Friday showed that Kelly was incorrect in his accusations against Wilson.
Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning to continue his feud with Wilson, calling her “wacky” and saying she “is killing the Democratic Party.”
He continued his attacks on Sunday: “Wacky Congresswoman Wilson is the gift that keeps on giving for the Republican Party, a disaster for Dems. You watch her in action & vote R!” he tweeted.
